About This Coverage
Environmental insurance is unusual in that it exists to fill gaps in coverage created by exclusions in other insurance policies - primarily commercial general liability and commercial property policies.
There are no industry standards for the coverages offered in an environmental insurance policy. As a result, the coverages offered between different environmental insurance policies vary a great deal, even within the same coverage line. In addition, because most environmental insurance policies are written in the excess and surplus lines insurance marketplace, there is little regulatory oversight of the coverage line.
Care needs to be exercised to ensure that a policy purporting to cover environmental exposures does in fact do so. Genuine environmental insurance needs to provide coverage for losses arising from the release or escape of pollutants.
Although there are other type of environmental impairment insurance policies, the commonly available ones are divided into three main types.
